We’ve got a Blink Book Review bonus today!

I read “Susan, Linda, Nina & Cokie” back in 2022 when it first came out. It’s worth a re-read now with the death this week of one of NPR’s “Founding Mothers,” Susan Stamberg.

I commend this book to anyone who has an interest in understanding the origin story of NPR and its local stations.

I’m a long-time NPR fan girl ever since I discovered WAMU, the NPR affiliate in DC, when I was a young Hill staffer in the mid 1980s. At that point I never dreamed I’d have the chance to work for our own public radio network in SC – something I’ve now gotten to do twice!!

Little did I know as I tuned in to Morning Edition and All Things Considered on my daily DC commute that I was listening to history being made – and I don’t mean just the history these four journalists reported on. This book is their history, and the author does a beautiful job to parallel these journalists’ individual stories and struggles with the historic events in their news reporting.
