FAQs with Reba

What’s your best advice to get past writer’s block?

I always go back to the lesson I learned from one of my favorite authors, Anne Lamott. Her book, “Bird by Bird,” tells the story of her little brother trying to tackle a big homework assignment about birds. Overwhelmed, the boy asked their dad where to start. The dad replied, ‘just bird by bird,” encouraging the child to tackle the challenge one step at a time. Best writing and life advice I’ve got for most situations.

What’s your most useful tip for overcoming stage nerves?

Take it slow. Breathe and use your verbal white space. Most people are familiar with the idea of “white space” in print materials. It’s the empty space around graphics and words that makes a document easy to read. The same is true for speaking. Taking a breath and establishing “verbal white space”  gives the listener time for your words to sink in. Verbal white space can also slow down an aggressive questioner.

Why should strong writing and speaking skills matter to people who have neither in their official job description?

There’s no doubt that people with strong writing and speaking skills make a team stronger, regardless of job description or level of authority in an organization. I believe that strong writers and confident speakers are also critical thinkers. They are the people who leaders want around the leadership table with them. I encourage people to be the one in a meeting who can break down a complex concept and communicate it easy-to-understand language using concise written and spoken words.

What’s your favorite tip to give college students and new grads?

Write thank-you and follow-up notes (handwritten, not emailed). I encourage students and new grads to collect business cards or contact info from people they meet at events, in meetings, or just out and about. A handwritten “nice to meet you” note will set someone apart and help people recall the contact. Technology is good, but the personal touch still matters (along with decent penmanship).
