I know better than to advise a client to use a website relaunch as a news hook. That tactic became obsolete about the same time as the Palm Pilot went out of favor.
But today, I’m nudging that rule aside a bit and celebrating the relaunch of the Medway Group’s website as a milestone of meeting my three-year business goals.
I digress … but this kind of reminds me of buying my first plastic yellow ukulele several years ago when I started taking lessons. I promised myself I’d invest in a high-quality wood one if I stuck with playing for a year. At exactly one year, I returned to the music store and allowed myself the joy of that treat when I reached my goal.
This new website isn’t all that different. When I formally launched the Medway Group in 2022 (read that post here), I invested in a start-up website for my start-up company. The goal was – by the end of year three – to be able to budget for an experienced, professional designer who could help showcase the company’s work.
This month, I mark the third anniversary of the Medway Group, and that milestone includes a new professionally designed site.
So no… an updated website still isn’t exactly news. But it’s my business version of buying that high-quality wood uke. I’m allowing myself the joy of a celebration. I met my top three goals around revenue, client mix, and most importantly, working with people and organizations that make a difference.
And I can afford to hire an experienced, professional designer!

I had the pleasure of working with the very talented and intuitive designer, Danielle Salley, founder of Danielle Salley Creative, who took my vision to reality.
I wanted a clean and simple design with plenty of white space. I didn’t want flashy graphics or any stock photos. I wanted to manage the content myself once the design was complete.
Danielle far exceeded my expectations. She even convinced me that a few personal photographs can help tell a story. Danielle also created a new way to showcase my writing on the site. And as a bonus, she connected me to a new – and now mutual – client in the process.
Take a look around the new site, and you’ll learn more about the Medway Group’s focus on communications planning, writing/editing, advocacy, and presentation skills coaching.
The “Stories” section of the site is a bookshelf of sorts for various writing projects. There you’ll find my collection of Blink Book Reviews (short reviews you can read in a blink); musings on creativity, writing and reading; and career lessons learned.
As part of this celebration, I shout out huge thanks to all the clients who have let me help them connect people and ideas. This is work I love that has tapped many long-time relationships and let me try some new things. In the process, I’ve gotten to do some good for organizations, people and causes I believe in.
I’ve learned a lot of lessons about working for myself over these three years (not the least of which is I’m not qualified to be my own IT director :). More on that later.
Today … it’s just about a little celebration.
